Membership and Donations
Please help us preserve local history by becoming a member of the Society. You can go directly to our secure on-line site here.

The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is a non-profit organization relying entirely on the generosity of supporters---your family, friends and neighbors---to preserve, promote, and celebrate the history of our community.

We receive no on-going operating support from local, state, or federal governments. We are grateful to local foundations that have over the years supported us with targeted project grants: the Perry Foundation, the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, BamaWorks, and Bank of America. The City of Charlottesville has for several years supported our walking tours and the Spirit Walk with a small annual grant, and local businesses have also supported the Spirit Walk with sponsorships.

We pay a nominal rent for the McIntire Building, a City-owned property. Our librarian is a paid member of the staff of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. To this extent are we supported by taxpayer funding. As a non-profit organization, our financial records are available for public inspection upon request.

Become a Member

Annual membership dues:

  • $15 for students
  • $35 for individuals
  • $50 for family/household

You are cordially invited to become a member of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society.

Members will receive the annual Magazine of Albemarle County History, the quarterly Bulletin which announces all Society programs and events, discounts on Society publications and some library services, and advance notice of special events.

Memberships are valid for one calendar year. If you join in April 2008, for example, your membership will be up for renewal in January 2009. We encourage you to renew your membership as close to January as possible, so that you will not miss any ACHS mailings or notices in the new year. Of your dues, all but $10.00 (the value of the Magazine), and any additional donation over that amount, is tax deductible to the full extent provided by law.

Contributions above the membership dues will be considered as donations to the Fund for Local History. Click here to become a member.

Support the Fund for Local History

Please give what you can afford. Your donation helps to sustain local history.

Unrestricted donations to our Fund for Local History will be recognized as follows:

  • Contributor:  $100-$249 (formerly “Three Notch’d Road Associate”)
  • Sponsor: $250-$499 (formerly “Hatton Ferry Associate”)
  • Patron: $500-$999 (formerly “Court Square Associate”)
  • Benefactor: $1000 or above

Donations at any of the four levels above will be acknowledged in the final quarterly Bulletin of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society, and on a special page on our website .  Donors who wish to remain anonymous are, of course, encouraged to make that stipulation known to us.

Click here to make your tax-deductable donation to the Fund for Local History.

Donor-restricted gifts, which can be earmarked to support specific projects (such as the Veterans History Project, quarterly meetings, or exhibits) or for specific purposes (computer upgrades, library purchases, etc.), are entirely welcome, but must be considered by the Society board on a case-by-case basis.

For information about planned giving, please contact us. We have board members who can guide you through the process, which may have significant tax advantages for you and your heirs.

Thank you for helping us to preserve your heritage.
