1907 Souvenirs of Jamestown

The latest exhibit at the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society explores the 1907 Ter-centennial Exposition, in which organizers celebrated the 1607 establishment of the first permanent English settlement in America. Planned and promoted as a major tourist attraction on a par with the World’s Fair, the Jamestown Exposition was a grand national pageant, revealing for us turn-of-the-century ideas about nation, race, gender, class, progress and history.  The 1907  Exposition generated thousands of souvenirs and ephemera; many on display in this exhibit are on loan from former ACHS Board member, collector  and area businessman Preston Coiner.  The exhibit will be on view in the McIntire Building through the end of June.

The Society is proud to exhibit the Coiner collection, which we hope will bring to life the Exposition itself and illuminate the attitudes of planners, exhibitors, and visitors towards America’s past and future.

Many people contributed to this exhibit. Larry Engle, of TREASURES THROUGH TIME, and Howard Newlon loaned additional souvenirs. Others who helped are: Edward Gaynor and the staff of Special Collections, University of Virginia Library; Becky Poulliot and Susanne Green, Hampton Roads Naval Museum; Randy Cabell; Daniel Bluestone; Jody Lahendro; Taylor Coble and Drew Melson, the Society’s interns; and ALC Copies.
